Leadmine Forest Stewardship Plan Update

The Town of Sturbridge is undertaking an update to the Forest Stewardship Plan for Leadmine Forest, a large and ecologically significant conservation area that supports recreation, wildlife habitat, and long-term forest health. With the current plan set to expire in September 2026, the Town secured grant funding through the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to develop a new, comprehensive plan that will guide management decisions over the next ten years. This effort is being led by a licensed professional forester and developed in coordination with key partners, including the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, which holds the Conservation Restriction on the property.

The updated plan will build upon past stewardship efforts while incorporating new priorities such as climate resilience and enhanced wildlife habitat. In addition to the core forest inventory and management recommendations, the project includes a Climate Forestry Plan and a Bird Habitat Plan. These components are designed to address changing environmental conditions, promote biodiversity, and ensure the forest remains healthy and sustainable for future generations. The plan will also evaluate management strategies such as invasive species control, trail use, and the role of selective forestry practices.

A collaborative and transparent process is central to this project. The Town will work closely with stakeholders—including local boards and committees, regional conservation partners, and residents—to gather input and share information. This will include a kickoff meeting with the forester, ongoing coordination with stakeholders, and opportunities for public engagement such as a guided site walk. Draft recommendations will be reviewed and refined before the final plan is submitted to DCR by the end of June.

Ultimately, this effort provides an opportunity not only to meet state requirements, but to thoughtfully plan for the future of Leadmine Forest. The updated stewardship plan will serve as a practical, science-based roadmap to balance conservation, recreation, and responsible forest management, ensuring that this valuable natural resource continues to benefit the community for years to come.
