Mitigation

Most Tree Removal Permits require mitigation -- replacement for trees cut down. As we require native mitigation, here is a great source (Lori's favorite) for finding native trees and shrubs: Native Land Trust's Quick Search. Make sure Ecoregion is marked as "Northeastern Coastal Zone" and the appropriate soil type and sun exposure are marked for where you would like to place plantings.

Why Trees Are Important in Sturbridge

Shoreline and wetland buffer trees are one of the most effective—and affordable—ways to protect water quality, reduce flooding, and support local wildlife here in Sturbridge. Healthy vegetation acts as a natural filter, sponge, and shield for our lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

Stormwater Control
Tree roots absorb and slow rainfall before it reaches nearby wetlands and streams. A single mature deciduous tree can intercept 500 to 1,000 gallons of rainfall per year through its canopy and root system. Wetlands in Sturbridge act like natural sponges—one acre can store up to 1.5 million gallons of stormwater during heavy rain, helping reduce flooding downstream.

Improved Water Quality
Roots and leaf litter filter out nutrients, pesticides, fertilizers, and road salts that would otherwise run off into our lakes and streams. This helps prevent algal blooms and keeps water clearer and healthier for both wildlife and recreation.

Shade and Cooler Water
Trees along shorelines keep water temperatures lower, which means more dissolved oxygen for fish and aquatic organisms. Cooler, shaded banks also reduce erosion, habitat loss, and rapid evaporation.

Wildlife Habitat
A single oak tree can support over 500 species of caterpillars, along with countless insects, birds, and mammals. Sturbridge’s woodlands are home to ladybugs, praying mantises, hover flies, lacewings, and native pollinators that rely on healthy trees for food and shelter. 

Air Quality and Carbon Storage
One large tree can absorb about 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and store over a ton of carbon in its lifetime—helping offset greenhouse gas emissions.

Property Protection & Value
Trees stabilize soils, protect against bank erosion, and buffer wind and sun, making your property more comfortable. According to the USDA, homes with mature trees can see a 3–15% increase in property value.

One (Fun) Reason Why Tree Diversity is Important

Most moth caterpillars can only feed on one tree genus or family. It’s the rule, not the exemption, that each moth needs a particular species. Example: Orange-tipped oakworm → Oaks only. If the right tree isn’t there, that species disappears. With over 3,000 species of moths and less than 150 species of butterflies in MA, moths are especially important for a thriving ecosystem. This is important to know as moths feed birds (especially song birds), bats, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.
