Conservation Commission

The Sturbridge Conservation Department protects the community’s natural resources and ensures that growth remains environmentally responsible and resilient. The Department promotes the development and preservation of natural and watershed resources while upholding environmental sustainability.

It manages over 1,772.95 acres of Open Space and Conservation Land, six Great Lakes, multiple ponds, and extensive wetlands. The Department provides professional and technical support to the Conservation Commission and enforces all federal, state, and local environmental laws including the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and the Sturbridge Wetland Bylaw.

This work directly supports the Master Plan goals of sustainability, land and water resource protection, and responsible development ensuring Sturbridge’s natural areas remain protected and accessible for generations to come.
