Organizational Chart

The Operations Division is commanded by Lt. Larry Bateman. The  Division is often referred to as the back bone of the department. Officers assigned to this division are the first to respond to many incidents in the town. They handle a wide variety of calls for service. Some of those calls include taking reports, follow up to complaints regarding neighborhood problems, accident investigation, serving court paperwork, motor vehicle enforcement and many others. The department generates more than 30,000 calls for service a year. There are currently 15 officers assigned to the operations division. The Operations Division is broken down into three patrol shifts, Day, Evening and Midnight shift which are each supervised by a patrol sergeant. Along with patrol sergeants are eleven patrol officers, one court officer and one animal control officer.

There are also specialty units assigned to the Operations Division. One is the Motor/Traffic Unit. The Unit is supervised by a Lieutenant with the assistance of a Sergeant. The Motor/Traffic Unit Sergeant is one of the most challenging assignments in the department. The Sergeant is responsible for working with many charities and town departments helping to organize parades, road races and other community events. Currently, there are three officers assigned to the Motor/Traffic Unit.

The Marine Unit is responsible for patrolling all lakes within the town limits. The unit performs safety checks on all marine vessels and monitors activities ensuring compliance of all applicable laws and taking the necessary enforcement actions to keep all persons safe.

The Animal Control Unit is responsible for handling animal complaints in the town. They respond to complaints of sick, abused or injured animals. They will also assist home owner with nuisance animals. They have a great deal of training and experience in this area.
 
The Operations Division also provides assistance to the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council. The Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (CEMLEC) is a non-profit corporation consisting of over 45 municipal law enforcement agencies and one county Sheriff that assist each other through a mutual aid agreement. CEMLEC covers an area of approximately 1,075 square miles and serves a population in excess of 550,000 citizens.
 
The Sturbridge Police Department currently assists the program by supplying three Motor Unit officers, one Swat Team officer and one Accident Reconstructionist.
