Latex Paint

It's not hazardous waste - Latex paint is not accepted with hazardous waste but does need to be disposed of properly.

Latex paint is a non-hazardous material and is not accepted at the hazardous waste disposal.  The best way to dispose of it is use it. Also consider learning how to estimate how much you really need for your next job.  You will find many retailers are quite helpful in accurately estimating.

To dispose of unwanted latex paint you will want to 1) Dispose of the paint and 2) Recycle the container.

The paint.  The needs to be thoroughly dried out and disposed with the trash.  An easy way to do this if to:

  • Get a bucket and line it with a clear plastic bag (2 bags will help prevent a mess)
  • Pour kitty litter into the bag (how much depends on how much paint, typically about a 1:1 volume)
  • Add the paint
  • Let it dry
  • Once it is dry it can be disposed of with household trash

The bucket or can

  • The can should be empty now, right?
  • Please take the top off and let the can dry before recycling
  • Tops go in the metal recycling container
  • Metal cans with plastic bottoms go in the burnable container
  • All metal cans go in the metal recycling container
