Fire Safety Tips

"DO"

  • Numers affixed to housesNUMBER YOUR HOUSE with numbers large enough to be visible from the street.  Finding a house at night that is NOT numbered adds precious minutes to our getting you the help you need.  
  • Turn as many lights on as you can, especially exterior lights.  Make your home as visible as possible.
  • Have someone watching by the door when possible.
  • Participate in the Visual Address Indicator Program offerred by the department.

  • Smoke wafting near smoke detectorINSTALL SMOKE/CO ALARMS in all bedrooms/sleeping quarters.Smoke/CO alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries.
  • Change batteries twice per year. We recommend to do this during changes in daylight savings time. "Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries".

  • Hand-drawn map showing escape route from a houseDEVELOP A FAMILY FIRE ESCAPE PLAN.  Always have two means of escape.
  • Ensure all family members know the pre-designated meeting spot, and be sure it is clearly marked on your escape plan.  Practice your plan once you have it in place.
  • Once you're out - STAY OUT!  Never go back into a burning building.

  • INSTALL AND MAINTAIN AN ABC-RATED FIRE EXTINGUISHER  in your home.

"DO NOT"

  • REMOVE smoke detector batteries to use in other applications.
  • PANIC - Try to remain calm.
  • EVER use water to extinguish a grease fire.
  • EVER,  EVER GO BACK INTO A BURNING HOUSE ONCE YOU HAVE EXITED!!!

Fire Safety / Fire Prevention Week is observed from Sunday to Saturday during the week where October 9th falls.
